What is a period and why do we have them?
It’s normal female biology! And, it’s a major sign of physical maturity—of becoming a woman.
VERY simply, a period is when a woman’s body releases tissue it no longer needs. This tissue comes from the uterus, which is where a baby (fetus) develops in the female body. Every month or so, the uterus lining gets thicker. This is to prepare for a fertilized egg if the woman becomes pregnant. If the egg doesn’t get fertilized, that lining is released from the body through the vagina. This is called menstruation.
So when a girl has her period she is not "bleeding"—her body is just getting rid of a small amount of blood and some un-needed tissue. It is a natural, normal body process.
What does menstruation feel like?
The actual flow of your period doesn’t feel like much—you can’t feel it coming out. When you actually get a period, you may feel some dampness in the crotch area—this is probably a few spots of blood on your underwear .
Does having your period smell?
It shouldn’t! Menstrual odor happens when menstrual fluid comes in contact with air. When menstrual fluid is absorbed within the vagina, it is not exposed to the air, so there shouldn’t be an odor. Using tampons or changing pads frequently usually takes care of the problem.
Does having your period hurt?
The period itself doesn’t hurt, but some girls and women get cramps or other symptoms during their periods that may be uncomfortable.
Do people/boys know when you are menstruating?
If you use menstrual protection and are careful about personal cleanliness, people won’t know you’re menstruating unless you tell them.
Do boys menstruate?
Menstruation is a part of the female reproductive function. Boys have a different reproductive system than women, so they don’t get periods. But they do go through physical changes at puberty including voice changes, the beginnings of facial, underarm and pubic hair, and the ability to produce sperm.
What causes cramps?
Menstrual cramps are just like other cramps. A muscle contracts too hard or too fast constricting blood flow and OUCH! But during your period, these cramps take place in your uterus, so they can be extra annoying. But mild cramps can result from other things besides your period. Things like having good posture, exercising, and eating right regularly all are important in preventing painful menstruation.
Does everybody get cramps?
Nope. But a lot experience some ouches and eeks in their stomachs and lower backs. If you get the period pains, try taking a hot bath or use a heating pad . Lots of chicas will lightly exercise. And of course, you could take some medicine. If cramps are totally wrecking your life, talk to your mom, a doctor, or the even the school nurse .
If your mother has bad menstrual cramps does that mean you’ll get them too?
There’s no medical reason to believe that a girl will get cramps just because her mother does. But if you have somehow learned to expect that you will, then your chances of experiencing cramps may be increased. So it’s important to realize that menstruation is a normal, healthy , event that doesn’t have to include cramps.
Cramps aren’t genetic like eye color. So even if your mom cramps badly, you might be safe. But if you’re totally freaked about maybe-possibly-someday cramping, be prepared. And remember, having a period might not be your favorite thing, but it’s normal and healthy. And it can be cramp free!
Is exercise good or bad for cramps?
As mentioned above, tons of girls find that light exercise will make cramps disappear. The trick is to not overdo it. A pulled muscle is way worse than a mild cramp! Light exercise also increases blood flow, which is why it helps cramps melt away.
Does having your period keep you from doing things you like?
It sure doesn’t have to! There’s no reason why having your period should keep you from doing what you enjoy—exercise, sports, working, or playing. With proper use of tampons or pads & pantiliners, you can wear your favorite clothes without worrying that anything can be "seen," and you can pretty much bet your good clothes won’t get stained.
Can you play sports when you have your period?
Having a period is a normal, healthy part of being a woman. Whether you wear a pad or a tampon, you can still play any sport and exercise.
Can you swim during menstruation?
Yes. The use of tampons has made it possible to swim during menstruation since the flow is absorbed internally. (It’s always a good idea to change you tampon right before and after you go swimming.) i don’t recommend wearing a pad when you swim since it will become wet and will not absorb your menstrual flow .
How does exercise affect menstruation?
A little exercise doesn’t affect the amount of flow or length of your period. In fact, it usually helps to relieve menstrual cramps. Since exercise is important for good health , it should be part of your daily routine. But very intense physical activity—like training to run a marathon—may cause amenorrhea, which is the absence of menstrual periods.
Can you take a hot bath during your period?
During your period, it’s most important to keep yourself fresh and clean. A hot bath or shower is fine—in fact it can help cramps or just relax you in general. Most women like to wear a tampon if they plan to take a nice long bath during their periods.
Can you wash your hair during menstruation?
Yes. You should wash your hair regularly so you will look and feel good. There is no reason not to wash your hair while you are menstruating. Water won’t stop your flow. If you wash your hair in the shower and you are flowing heavily, you may want to wear a tampon. Although some prefer to shower without wearing any a tampon—it’s a personal choice
